Packing for a Family Camp Retreat

Special Considerations for Special Friends

Fish or Swim–how to choose?

My family and I love camping, fishing, cooking, and boating; we’re all about the outdoors. Whether we’re setting up our tents by the lake or throwing our lines in the water, it’s such a thrill to be in nature. Cooking over an open fire is a fun tradition where we swap stories and share some good laughs and scary stories while making dinner, often with some fresh fish we caught ourselves (or bought from the store). Sure, the hot weather can bring in some annoying mosquitoes, but we’ve got our hacks to keep them away. The fun times we have through these adventures is priceless, making all the little inconveniences worth it.

When we are getting ready to go to our camp there are items that we always try to pack:

  1. Make sure you have good shelter if you are not in a house/cabin. Tent with staking supplies; sleeping bag, floor tarp, pillow, bedding.
  2. Different types of clothing for different conditions like layers. Camp shoes and water shoes. Swimwear
  3. Supplies for cooking and dining and hydration
  4. Personal items and toiletries; sunscreen, insect repellent and medicines.
  5. TOILET PAPER
  6. Gear like lamps, ropes, maps, phone and chargers, backpack, multi-purpose tool
  7. Entertainment – books, notebooks, games, cards, camera, binoculars, headphones
  8. Extras like trash bags and anything special you might need

When we get to the camp area, we always go grocery shopping to stock up on meals and our favorite camp snacks. Everything we cook, we put the word “camp” before it, like, “Camp Grits” and “Camp Biscuits.” Always “Camp S’mores”.

Remember to check the weather and keep your camp area clean and safe. Always pickup your trash and consider the people and animals you love.
